Next article: "Rackspace's excellent reputation management".

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond Emil. I know that it's a concept the tech industry is still trying to "sell" and convince the public of its stability and use. I'm sure it will come around.

I try not to slam Rackspace as much recently mainly because it's something all cloud companies have struggled with. Amazon and Media Temple have had their share of embarrassing issues as well.

No-You are not the only one. I am the GM of Rackspace’s Cloud Division, and I feel like we have let you down this weekend. I apologize.

I am not posting here to make excuses, but to tell you that you are basically right: Scaling a large storage system is not a trivial matter as you pointed out. I want to assure you that we are doing all we can to restore the confidence of our users in our system. As it turns out we have isolated some of the known issues to a bug in Jungle Disk 2.60a that prevented the directory cache system from working properly and resulted in an excessive load on the Cloud Files system even under normal operation.

Jungle Disk has rapidly corrected the error and Jungle Disk 2.60c is now available for download, and Jungle Disk customers are re-enabled on Cloud Files once they make the download. We will also be making some changes to Cloud Files that we found necessary to optimize Jungle Disk usage of Cloud Files. Over the next few days, Cloud Files will also release a number of infrastructure updates to correct those issues. As you pointed out correctly, in all this, no data loss has occurred.

I thank you for your candidness, and directness. I also thank you for being a loyal Rackspace customer, and for caring enough to write this. I appreciate it. I promise we will spare no effort to give you the Rackspace Cloud service you expect and deserve.

Feel free to send me an email with any questions or suggestions at emil.sayegh@rackspace.com. If you’d like a more in depth explanation, I’d be happy to get on a call with you as well. Also, we are keeping our status page up to date for all our customers: status.cloudfiles.mosso.com.

Many apologies, and thank you again.
